The ColorVision Spyder2PRO is a colorimeter, designed to calibrate computer monitors to any given standard.

Before you stop reading, allow me to explain the importance of this. Have you ever noticed how different a game or website or image can look on one system versus another? Or how utterly impossible it can be to make a photo look similar on paper to how it does on your screen? Most people simply do not care. But for the OCD cases amongst us, and any professional in the graphics field, this technology is a must.

Like tuning a guitar, color calibration of both CRT and LCD monitors can be up to the individual user. If, for example, one needs to play guitar in drop D, a non-standard tuning, it can be done. But playing the same guitar in a band will sound terrible. For that reason, every member of a band or orchestra or chamber music ensemble must make sure to tune to the proper key in order to ensure harmony and euphony. The same goes for color calibration. If one prefers to use a non-standard color setting on a monitor, or one merely does not realize that there is such a thing, there is no problem, technically.

However, let’s say, for example, that you want to create a website that will look similar to anyone who views it. If their monitors are uncalibrated, that is their problem. However, if you create content on a non-standard monitor, you’re playing with fire. At that point, the content itself has never been properly proofed or viewed on a standardized monitor. What might seem fine on an uncalibrated monitor might seem garish on one calibrated with the proper settings. Let’s flip the same scenario around to create another hypothetical situation. If you realize that certain colors appear off in images online, or your monitor seems to be too dark regardless of the hardware’s brightness settings, it’s definitely time to calibrate your monitor.

The unit comes packaged in an attractive and sturdy package containing both the unit and bundled software. The unit itself is black and silver plastic, and has a snap-on adapter for use with LCD screens. Three suction cups keep the unit mounted on a CRT monitor, and a weighted USB cord provides plenty of slack for calibrating your monitor(s). There is a large black item in the middle of the unit which appears to be an additional suction cup but is actually a light baffle.

The Spyder2PRO—and other colorimeters of similar nature—are only one method of color calibration. They are, however, the most accurate method. Other types of calibration tools show you on-screen instructions to the effect of picking the correct RGB balance and making sure the brightness scale is as wide as can be. One system uses a “Colorforms”-type sticker that sticks onto your monitor, allowing you to use on-screen sliders to match the color of the decal itself to the on-screen colors.

The colorimeter is able to accurately read the output of the monitor, and uses this information in creating a custom profile that will compensate for any of the monitor’s idiosyncrasies. The process takes about ten to fifteen minutes, and when it has completed, the user can view some sample images both with and without the calibration. This is useful for seeing just how much better the screen looks with calibration. You will tend to see a greater spectrum of color with increased contrast and more fidelity to real-life colors.

The process leaves you with an ICC profile, the standard file format for software color calibration. ICC profiles are used with Windows, Mac OS, all Adobe software, and can be used to calibrate monitors, scanners, and other color devices. They can also be embedded in images to help maintain color accuracy across different profiles.

And perhaps even more importantly: for those using multiple monitors, the Spyder2PRO will make sure that colors maintain accuracy from display to display, even if splitting your output between a CRT and an LCD. The Spyder2PRO is an excellent unit across the board, and displays an ease-of-use not usually found in professionally-oriented products.
