I never touched new phones but i was told phones comes with a firmware file. If you ahd uploaded new firmware files on tftp. Just mention the files under telephony system. Now every times phone tries to register it will check firmware version first if it was older, it will update the firmware files first if its same then it will ignore it. I have just purchased a used 7960 IP phone and I need to upgrade the firmware (MGCP) to SIP. I have tried Cisco and my local re-seller, but they wont sell me the firmware, all I can get is a quote for a new phone! Can anyone tell me how to get hold of copies of the firmware to upgrade the old phone to the latest version of SIP. Dang, just realized I didn't check the box for 'Mark this discussion as a Question' for my last two posts! Securecrt keygen patch. Annoyed.

I am working out of the CCNA Voice lab manual, and I am stuck in the registration process for my 7960 phones, which got me questioning something. The firmware..where does it come from?

If I was to setup a TFTP server, that would make sense..I dump what I want to TFTP into a directory, share that directory via TFTP program, configure something to connect to my TFTP and pull a file, cakewalk..however, I can't tell what i the heck my router is doing.it is like flying blind.

I have CME 8.0 as far as I can tell, running on an IOS of 15.1 that came with the 2821 I bought. Now do either of these include phone firmware by default?

1. If NO, what does the phone do when it doesn't see a firmware files on the TFTP server to download? (e.g. How does it register, operate, does it just halt, etc)

2. If YES, where does it store the files, and what is the file naming convention they use, or format (e.g .bin)? Basically, I could be looking at a Pelican, and not know what a Pelican was, and therefore not know I was looking at one..how do I recognize what a firmware file looks like, if it is sitting on the TFTP server, and if the phone is being told to pull it down? Which makes me ask the below:

A. How would you know what files the CME router is serving up for TFTP? (e.g. everything in flash, just stuff in a directory, or what?)

B. What command, or line, etc, tells the phone what firmware to load? Because the lab manual up to this point hasn't said jack about setting up a firmware file for the phone to download, etc.

In the end, I can't tell if my phones are being offered a firmware file of any kind, and where that file would come from, among other things..
